We tiptoed past. I gotta say, she looked sweet. She was wearing a strictly old lady black lace dress from some previous century and high-heeled shoes that laced up the back. Her hair was silvery in the lamplight. It was done up in a bun like she did sometimes, and it looked sweet in a prudish kind of a way, which almost changed my mind about her, but she was snoring like a goddam trucker. Also, her half glasses had slid down her nose practically to her lip, as if she were trying to see out her nostrils.
Me and Jack chugged some milk straight out of my gallon bottle from the fridge, then we went upstairs and I got to take a shower first, but I made Jack stay in the bathroom, where he sat on the toilet with the shag seat cover down because I was a little nervous about Mrs. Bobson finding him. The bathroom door had a lock on it; through a door, I could BS that cow any which way I felt like.
I was in the hot shower and I said, “Jack, where do you wash yourself? The utility sink in the spaceship isn’t much good.”
“I sleep different places. I eat and wash different places. I have a few disciples, like the minyan. They like to take care of me. It’s a mitzvah, a meritorious act, to take care of the Thrice Chosen.”
“Are any of your disciples girls?”
“We don’t do anything funny together, Lea. Did Sylvia tell you something about me?”
“What the hell could that dyke tell me?”
“Don’t call her that. God Tetragrammaton has a purpose for all kinds of people.”
“If you’re going to get moral on me, hand me in the soap. I forgot it on the sink. You can close your eyes or you can keep them open, I don’t care.”
He kept his closed but I kept mine open. I read about a guy who turned into a stag because he peeped at Diana, the virgin goddess, in the woods somewhere in Greece. Jack would never do that. You could trust him, is what I was thinking. I made him stand there a minute with his arm in the spray while I looked at him, and he said, “Here…here…here, Lea…here…!” and I loved him.
I took the soap and he said, “So what did Sylvia tell you about me?”
I said, “Nothing, because she got sick to her stomach all of a sudden.”
“I bet you wonder how I could deal hashish and be a tsadik.”
“A what?”
“A holy person.”
“Well, how could you?”
The hot water felt good. All the underground was washing off me and going back underground through the drain. I washed my hair, and there was really starting to be some to wash. I didn’t really care how Jack could be anything and anything else. Whatever he was was okay in my book. I didn’t have a problem with it, but he seemed to feel like talking. That’s guys. I liked to hear him talk though.
The water on my head and down my back and in my face, and Jack’s voice—it was all good.
